Amilcar de Castro
—
To celebrate 30 years of Amilcar de Castro´s representation in Rio de Janeiro, the gallery Silvia Cintra + Box 4 prepared an exhibition with some unpublished works and curiosities of the creative process of this great Brazilian artist.
Part of the exhibition is a series of 10 paper drawings with sketches of the sculptures made by Amilcar throughout the 80’s. In the drawings it is possible to see annotations calculations, titles of the pieces and even the suppliers contacts. Two other large drawings and a model, affectionately called “peteca”, show the artist’s tests for the famous “glass sculpture” created in the 80’s and also on display.
Another highlight of the selection is a wooden table used by Amilcar as support to make the screens. After the top became “dirty” with ink, the artist then actually did a painting on this layered memory. Throughout his career, 15 ceilings were made that were considered by Amilcar his only paintings, since his canvases were called drawings by him.
In the field of sculptures, the surprise is due to a large work in corten steel from the 50’s, one of the first made in large format, and a small sculpture in granite, the only one in this material in all its trajectory. Complete the exhibition three screen drawings of the series of lines, made in the 90’s.
The exhibition of Amilcar de Castro in Rio de Janeiro happens next to another tribute to the artist. During the Frieze NY fair, the gallery will feature a large booth only with works of the sculptor made between the 70’s and 80’s.
