That Disc
Chiara Banfi
—
That Disc is the title of the fourth individual that the artist Chiara Banfi presents at the gallery. The show, like all of the artist’s work, explores the relationships between memory, music, sound and nature. This time, the research is based on the vinyl record covers and the affective relationship they end up creating with the audience over time.
The series Covers, composed of five works, consists of three types of covers that are common in the music industry. The simple cover, which is just the cover and back cover, the double cover that also has two other inner covers and the triple, with four more spaces to work the image. This work of Chiara treats precisely this industrial process before the cover turn out to be cover. The choice of the image, the set of these images and the creation of the final object.
All images are of plants, found randomly in nature. From them, the artist manipulates the natural geometry of the design of the shafts, the marks and the colors and proposes a new reading of this image as a disc cover, restricted to a space of 31x31cm. The cover turns the subject of the disc and no longer the artist or the label.
Also part of the exhibition is the series That Disc. They are frottages of white chalk on black cotton paper, where on each sheet we have a disc, its cover and its envelope. These drawings “freeze” forever the memory of a disc, the memory of a time or a song.
