Steel Paper
Iole de Freitas

Iole de Freitas at Silvia Cintra + Box 4
Opens on August 9th the new individual of the artist Iole de Freitas at Silvia Cintra. There will be nine small and medium-sized white sculptures that will occupy the space of the gallery in the same way as they were in the artist’s atelier throughout the research process, supported only on simple plywood. The new series is an unfolding of the exhibition “The weight of each one”, realized by the artist at the MAM of Rio de Janeiro in 2005. It was there that Iole left the sheets of polyurethane with which she had been working for years and focused only on stainless steel .
The challenge of the exhibition in the gallery was to make sculptures on a much smaller scale than those shown in the museum, and to propose a new relationship with them. Now the work is no longer related to space and architecture, but to the body itself. The beginning of this research was made with vulgar papers, cartolines, which Iole cut and folded exploring the possibilities of the concave and the convex. The next step was to transfer this result to the aluminum, which is already a thicker and heavier material and later, on the calendering, to reproduce this in steel, the final material of the work. But it still lacked an element, the color, that appeared of the artist’s need to bring luminosity and transparency to the sculptures. With numerous layers of white paint and sandpaper, Iole can reproduce in the pieces the light, the shadow and the roughness of the paper. Also part of the show is a video in which the viewer will have the opportunity to see the artist herself talking about her creative process.
