IOLE DE FREITAS AT SILVIA CINTRA + BOX 4 GALLERY
The exhibition “Os Terra”, by the sculptor Iole de Freitas inaugurates at June 22. Six wall-sculptures and a large piece at the center of the gallery promote a dialogue between the artist and the architectural space, the premise of all her work.
This new series is an offshoot of Iole’s last exhibition at the gallery in 2018, when the artist began working with small sets of shapes that related to each other and to the void between them, giving rise to a unique work. But what used to be white pieces, which referred to molds made on paper, this time gained color.
“Os Terra”, as the artist named these works, refers to the subtle gradations of the color “terra” in the works, which range from the almost ocher to the dark red of the ferrous lands of Minas Gerais, where she spent her childhood. The pigmentation of the steel, made with sandblasting, transforms the raw condition of the material and creates a transformation effect that subtracts the notion of weight, as if the pieces were made of tree bark or animal hide.
In the link https://we.tl/t-rWgoKw2mMx Iole, at her studio, speaks about the creative process of this new series and the challenge of producing an entire show during the pandemic. This video will also be available in the gallery during the exhibition.
There will be no opening (vernissage), but the gallery is open for visitors from Sunday to Friday (10:00 to 19:00) and Saturdays (12:00 to 18:00), respecting all health safety protocols. No prior appointment required.
