Alabastro
Renata Haar
—
Alabaster is a natural calcite formation, which is the point of departure for Renata Har’s first solo-exhibition, curated by Caíque Tizzi, at the gallery Silvia Cintra + Box 4. In this exhibition, the artist utilises visual allegories in order to relate to the alabaster itself and its geological materiality as well as its multiple poetical interpretations.
The exhibition is a multi-media site-specific installation. On one side, one can see a large painting on carpet with spray paint, pigment, paint and found objects, on the other side of the space, many other artworks are displayed together to compose a large collage in the gallery, showing the diversity of materials explored by Har: glitter, paper, tule, plastic, plaster, balloons, glass, neon, etc.
One old bath-tub painted with black boat lack is placed in the middle of space, as part of an audio installation that is an archive of sounds recorded from horns of ships. In the space, Renata Har also places an wearable sculpture that will be activated during her artist talk on the opening day.
Alabastro also shows the film War and Debauchery made in collaboration with the Brazilian film-maker Karim Ainouz, the work is a result of collected images found on the internet describing the formation of the alabaster. This film works as a curatorial text which describes a world where water became calcite.
Alabastro marks Renata Har´s first solo-exhibition in Brazil, her native country that she left to study at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Christian Boltanski. Since 2012, Renata Har lives in Berlin, where she works alongside Caique Tizzi at the Agora Collective, a project space and artist collective working internationally across Europe.
