Tempo
Chiara Banfi
—
“Tempo” is the title of Chiara Banfi’s new show at the gallery. The artist explores
the relationships between memory, rhythm and nature while referring to a new way of perceiving time. The series “Orbits” and “Calendar” were created during the pandemic and refer to a time that is diluted, like a watercolor, until it reaches a kind of pause.
The circle is the most present form in the works. Moons, planets and agates were the way found by the artist to reflect the thought of a circular time, in which images are kept as a memory of a passage of time. The polyptych of 25 watercolors and 4 agates representes the month of February 2020.
During quarantine the material the artist had at home to work with was a watercolor kit. “I started playing with water and color,” she explains. Gradually, shapes that resemble moons and planets began to appear, and these delicate lines emerged from the paper and took to the space as well. The back wall of the gallery is covered by the installation “Convoluted Universe”, which exemplifies this expansion of movement well.
Since the beginning of her career, the artist has sought to explore sound structures in a sensorial way. This is what we see in the series “Elza, Aquarelas do Brasil”, which features a rare recording of singer Elza Soares singing a song by Ari Barroso acappella. Chiara developed, together with the team of a vinyl record factory, a way to join the colored parts of discarded LPs and polymer residues, creating unique paintings from the remains. The making of this series took place the day before the singer’s death.
