Art Basel Miami Beach 2016

For the Nova sector at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016, Silvia Cintra + Box 4 gallery presents works by two artists that, by using different media, address the social and psychological aspects of our everyday and invite the public to reflect upon life, spirituality and future. These works were developed throughout the last two years and some of them are brand new, which reflect well how current changes in the world have affected the visual arts.
Cinthia Marcelle (Belo Horizonte, 1974) is showing works from the series “em-entre-para-perante” (in-between-for-before). On the walls, a series of striped fabric, whose black stripes have been covered in white, are hanging high above, resembling the internal patio of a prison. On the floor, a group of objects covered by black shoelaces, which overall implies on tools that are used in escape situations. From this representation the artist debates the concepts of imprisonment and escape, investigating the symbolic space of prisons from an outsider’s point of view, even though we each experience confinement (social, economic and psychological) in our daily lives.
Laercio Redondo (Paranavaí, 1967) shows the series “After Giotto”, especially made for the fair. The work takes as a point of departure St Mark’s Church (1960) located in Stockholm and built by architect Sigurd Lewerentz. This church is extensively constructed with humble material – bricks, wood and raw metal and it is a poetic document dedicated to humanism, thus important to be remembered as a building that brings together the significance of a personal inventory of experience within a community. It could also remind us of the importance of spirituality and togetherness when political programs still defined society and its functions. In times of turbulence, it speaks of how society could come together in a shared public space, compelling us to confront the condition of our existence and its singularities.
