Bordas da Tarde (Edges of the Afternoon)
—
The Silvia Cintra + Box 4 Gallery announces “Bordas da Tarde” (Edges of the Afternoon), the second solo exhibition by artist Felipe Cohen in its space. The show opens on October 22nd, from 7 PM to 10 PM, and will remain on view until November 19th.
“Bordas da Tarde” deepens Felipe Cohen’s investigation into the relationship between the passage of time and landscape, a central axis in his production. The exhibition gathers a set of four sculptural works in stone, glass, and wood, and ten acrylic on canvas paintings, presented in two distinct dimensions, all of which are unprecedented.
Cohen’s work in this exhibition explores the intersection between landscape and temporality. Recurring visual elements, such as forms resembling hourglasses and valleys, are employed in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional compositions. The repetition of the “X” or rhombus shape establishes a modular vocabulary that seeks to materialize abstract phenomena – such as time and the atmospheric sensations derived from the effects of light in space.
In the paintings, the constructive approach to space is defined by edges and contours. These elements, with variations in brightness and tonality relative to their backgrounds, suggest different depths and topographies. The pictorial research articulates from four conceptual components: solid, atmospheric, luminous, and liquid, delineating valley landscapes through a rigorous formal structure.
The sculptures complement this research, translating the same modular formal language into materials such as stone, glass, and wood. The material selection intensifies the dialogue with nature and with the perception of passage, exploring the interactions between density, transparency, and form.
“Bordas da Tarde” proposes an exhibition journey that invites the observation of the frontiers between the tangible and the conceptual, through the systematization of forms and the exploration of matter.
