Bruno Cançado
Belo Horizonte, 1981.
Bruno Cançado was born in Belo Horizonte in 1981. Master in Visual Arts from Cornell University (Ithaca, USA, 2019), he graduated in Visual Arts from UEMG (2010) and in Social Communication from PUC Minas (2003). He has participated in several residencies, such as Lighthouse Works (Fishers Island, USA, 2019), Fina Artes Wok Center (Provincetown, USA, 2014-2015) and Funcação Bienal de Cerveira (Portugal, 2014), among others.
Bruno Cançado’s work is based on architecture and how it intertwines the landscape, the dynamics, the transformation of the city and the idea of dwelling. The artist develops his practice from the physicality of things, appropriating the memory and meanings inherent in materials. The artist’s sculptures often have their materiality transfigured by the suggestion of another distinct materiality, proposing a game with pre-established meanings and detaching our experience from what is familiar.
Bruno understands that each material has a provenance, undergoes transformations, takes a certain form, and has different meanings in our society. His work is based on this memory of matter, like a silent line that crosses the threshold between sculpture and drawing.
