O comércio das coisas (The trade of things)
Carlito Carvalhosa
—
The artist from São Paulo, Carlito Carvalhosa, opens on the 13th his solo show at the gallery – “O comércio das coisas” (The trade of things). It will be a great interference in space, with numerous small and medium format paintings on aluminum and wax, which will be arranged in the middle of cold light tubes hanging from the ceiling.
These new paintings in oil and wax refer to a typology that was developed by the artist in the late 80’s, when he performed his first experiments with beeswax and pigments. In addition, some works from this period will be present in the show, creating a relationship with the new works in which Carlito uses his own wrists and thumbs to manipulate the material, creating impressions with color overlay.
The aluminum paintings in this new series are no longer monochromatic like the works developed by the artist since the late 2000s and have won unusual combinations of color. The oil on the mirrored aluminum creates a kind of surface on which the paint seems to float.
Carlito Carvalhosa was part of the Casa 7 (House 7) art group, with names like Nuno Ramos, Rodrigo Andrade and Paulo Monteiro. During the 1980s they were responsible for the movement back to painting in São Paulo. During the last decades, he has participated in numerous important exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, among them the Biennials of São Paulo, Havana and Mercosur and an individual in 2013 at the MOMA in New York.
