Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box 4 presents Poex, a new solo exhibition by Ascânio MMM
The artist breaks from the rigor of his traditional geometric grids and incorporates irregularity and emptiness into his new series of sculptures.
On August 15th, Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box 4 opens Poex, a new exhibition by Ascânio MMM. Featuring a curatorial text by Felipe Scovino, the show signals a turning point in the artist’s production. The recent artworks challenge the classic symmetry of his career, introducing irregular formats, hollow structures, and the use of mirrors to alter the perception of space.
Ascânio built his career by structuring aluminum into mathematical and orthogonal meshes. In Poex, the grid system remains but undergoes a deliberate rupture. The geometric frameworks appear intentionally incomplete. According to the curator’s reading, this visual fracture does not represent a misstep, but rather the transformation of the void into a constructive element, taking on a role as central as the metal itself.
The new series operates on the boundary between sculpture and painting. The artist uses industrial profiles to create large manual weaves where color, applied internally, dictates the rhythm of observation. The rigidity of the material gives way to an optical flexibility. Furthermore, the logic of vertical and horizontal stacking, common in previous series, is replaced by the adoption of the diagonal. This shift in axis generates a continuous spatial tension and a kinetic landscape that redesigns itself according to the visitor’s steps.
Ascânio’s research gains a monumental scale in the artwork Quasos/Poligonal 3. Formed by two semicircular modules measuring three meters in height, the structure invites the public to walk through its interior. At the top, inverted mirrors reflect and fragment the observer’s image, integrating the body into the sculpture and generating a disorienting perception of space itself. For Scovino, the power of the current work lies exactly in its unfinished aspect and the abandonment of rigid rules of delimitation. The edges have exploded. The result is an environment where the perception of form is dictated by hesitation, experimentation, and the physical participation of those who walk through the gallery.
