Sebastião Salgado
Sebastião Salgado
—
Sebastião Salgado, one of the biggest names in world photography, inaugurates his first show in the gallery. The exhibition intends to make a collection of important moments of the work of Salgado from the 70’s to the present day.
The starting point is a set of four photographs made in Latin America between the late 70’s and early 80’s. This series gave rise to Salgado’s first book, Other Americas. Following in the 80’s, five images represent the historic series that the photographer performed in Serra Pelada, a mountain range located in Pará that was considered the largest open-cast mining in the world and at that time lived a true “golden race”.
The 90’s are represented by three works, one of them being the biggest image of the exhibition and one of the most reproduced in the work of Salgado, a station full of people in India.
Finishing the show, 18 images from the series Genesis, show a more lyrical side of Salgado’s work. For eight years, the photographer has toured numerous places on the planet in search of landscapes still untouched by man. Brazil appears strongly in this series, which passes through the Amazon, Pantanal and indigenous tribes in Pará.
During the Genesis expeditions, Salgado lived for the first time the experience of photographing animals and establishing with them a relationship of proximity and often of trust. Alligators, whales, penguins and jaguars close the exhibition.
