Sereias
Isidora Gajic
—
It is with great pleasure that we present Isidora Gajic’s second solo exhibition at Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box 4. Mermaids opens to the public on February 8, from 7pm to 10pm. In this show specially designed for the gallery, the artist is exhibiting eleven photographs and a polyptych printed on silk: the latest material the artist has been experimenting with, giving her delicate images a new form, alive, mobile and floating. A rough sea, sirens and jellyfish swimming, foaming waves, a breeze, a swirling sky. His images are firmly grounded in basic elements: water, fire, air and earth, but at the same time they yearn for something ethereal and otherworldly: stars, universe and sky.
According to Paulo Sérgio Duarte, – in his critical text on the series – “Gajic’s Sirens escape any mythology; be it Greek, flying women whose singing drove sailors mad; or Nordic, beautiful half-fish women, narcissistic – they loved a mirror. These pictures are different scores, they oppose each other without fighting. They are undoubtedly musical. They contrast and in their disparate images they evoke different moments of modernity. But they have a particularity that makes them unique: anyone looking at photos on silk is mistaken. Silk is not a support, it is as important a protagonist as the emulsified images. And that transforms everything. Emancipated, silk comes with its long history, from the Far East, to make us see what we had never seen before. With its unique lightness and texture, the images literally float before our eyes.”
This world created by the photographer is confronted with human interaction or interference through images of hands, faces and personal objects. Gajić is simultaneously exploring themes such as feminine energy, the birth of nature, culture, everyday moods, fairy tales and time. Isidora Gajić’s approach to images is visually poetic, with the aim of transforming emotions and relationships into photographs. The moment an image is captured is just the birth of a sophisticated and transformative process in which images become more than photographs.
Isidora Gajić was born in 1988 in Belgrade, Serbia, and grew up in Hungary and Switzerland.
