Silvia Cintra + Box 4 presents “Silence” by Miguel Rio Branco
Exhibition brings together eight photographic works that articulate gesture, fragmentation, and the suspension of time
Silvia Cintra + Box 4 opens the exhibition Silence on October 1, 2026, with an opening reception from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Bringing together eight photographic works dated from 1992 to 2026, the show bridges different moments of the artist’s production through themes that run throughout his career: the persistence of gesture, the fragmentation of the image, and the relationships between body, matter, and memory. The exhibition remains on view through November 6.
In Rio Branco’s images, gesture retains the intensity of an event whose continuity escapes the gaze. Inscribed on bodies and surfaces, it survives as a trace, prolonging tensions, contacts, and movements within the apparent stillness of photography. Silence constitutes itself within this interval, as a suspension that grants the image a duration of its own and asks the viewer to pay attention to what remains.
Fragmentation organizes this experience. Through framing and assembly in diptychs, triptychs, and polyptychs, the artist brings together elements that share a single sensitive density. Between one image and another, the intervals open up possibilities for association, allowing meaning to form also within discontinuities. Color plays a decisive role in this process: it establishes correspondences, intensifies contrasts, and gives photography a pictorial thickness that runs through his entire output.
By bringing these works together, Silence highlights an investigation into the image’s capacity to retain and transform experience. The seduction of color, the vulnerability of bodies, and the wear and tear of matter form a field of relations in which presence and loss continually implicate one another. Beauty thus guards the instability of that which is subject to disappearance, while photography prolongs its resonance.
About the Artist
Miguel Rio Branco was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1946. A Brazilian artist, he has developed a body of work for over five decades that articulates photography, painting, film, and installation. His work investigates the expressive possibilities of the image through color, cutting, and montage, building relationships between everyday experience, memory, and the sensory dimension of the gaze.
Among the milestones of his career are the exhibitions Nada levarei quando morrer, at MASP in São Paulo (2017); Photographies 1968–1992, at LE BAL in Paris (2020–2021); and Palavras cruzadas, sonhadas, rasgadas, roubadas, usadas, sangradas, presented at the Instituto Moreira Salles and the Fundação Iberê Camargo between 2020 and 2023. He has also participated in group exhibitions such as Four Photographers, Four Places, at the Museum of Modern Art — MoMA in New York (2019–2021), and América Latina 1960–2013, at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris (2013–2014), in addition to the São Paulo and Havana biennials.
His works are included in collections such as those of MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, and MASP. Since 2010, the Instituto Inhotim has maintained a gallery dedicated to his production.
